ACADEMIC
PROGRAM
The two academic programs
of the department are:-
-
M.Sc (Hons.) Physics: It is an integrated first degree program without an intermediate B.Sc degree. This program enables the students to choose either an industrial or an academic career after the completion of the program. A student having a sound 10 + 2 background can finish the program in 4 years. Usually people opting for this degree choose a second degree, such as B.E. (Hons) etc. under the dual degree scheme so as to make themselves more competent for the industrial jobs. The department makes a very conscious effort to satisfy the students' quest for learning by offering new courses frequently as electives, in addition to the compulsory disciplinary courses (CDC). The list and the description of the courses can found in
Physics Course Descriptions.
PhD Program: The institute's
PhD program is primarily designed for a student who has already completed one of the higher degrees of the institute (viz. M.E./M.Phil./M.S./ M.Pharm.). An alternate scheme is available for first degree holders, including students who have completed their Masters from other reputed institutions. They have to be eligible for admission to the higher degree courses. Each student needs to qualify for formally getting accepted in the doctoral program after passing a qualifying examination. Students can either be supported financially by external funding agents such as UGC, CSIR etc, or be supported by the institute in the form of Teaching/Project assistantships. In the latter case, students have to give courses, conduct undergraduate labs and undertake other
assignments issued by the institute, in addition to their own research work. There is a possibility that after the completion of the degree, they are absorbed in the department as Lecturers.
In addition to the above programs, Physics department
offers various core physics courses for students of
other disciplines of the Institute.
